My Street Photography Journey (part 1)

The Beginning - 2010

2010

When I started shooting Street Photography, I was doing it without even realizing I was shooting Street Photography.

At the beginning of your photography career, you will be shooting anything that catches your eye.

Most probably, like myself, you won’t have someone to guide you into what genre you should go.

I continued shooting Street Photography just for fun.

This picture has sparked my journey through Street Photography.

2011

I continued shooting without knowing exactly what I was doing.

But without knowing it, I was on the right track.

2012

For some reason, this year I did not do much.

2013

Still shooting blindly, but not bad.

2014

I started to get there, bit by bit.

I'm doing my best, but I still haven’t started researching.

These images were part of the first solo exhibition in 2016.

This image was also in my first solo exhibition and also won me competitions.

2015

This was the year when I decided to do my first ever solo exhibition.

This year I really worked hard because I had an Objective/Project in mind: "The Exhibition."

Hard work pays off, but still no research on genre photographers, just watching other photographers' images.

I was going around Malta trying to find a Decisive Moment, as Henri Cartier-Bresson said.

This image gave me a lot of success. Here I started seeing the geometries, harsh light and harsh shadows, framing and composing better.

2016

This was the year of my First Solo Exhibition which I decided to do at Continental Cars Limited Showroom on Friday 18th November.

But it was also a year full of travel and street photography in Brussels, Antwerp, Istanbul, and Matera.

Brussels

Antwerp

Istanbul

Matera

Back to Malta

These images were used in the exhibition as well.

Exhibition day arrived and it was a success.

Some of the artwork in the exhibition.

'Family and friends', even my foreign friends, attended my exhibition.

A big thank you goes to my best friend, Keith Ellul, for helping me all the way.

These images were taken after a walkthrough of my exhibition, and afterwards we went to a small workshop.

2017

And here the journey of experimentation with Harsh Light and Harsh Shadows began. I started reading and researching, as it should be done in the beginning.

A lot of trial and error, but getting there.

The most important thing was to find the light, and the best light for long shadows is early morning or near sunset.

The journey started to take shape. I was doing this by reading, seeing other photographers' work, YouTube, and practicing.

Sicily

When we arrived in Enna, it was really foggy. It wasn’t what I expected, but I tried to make the most of it. It was something new.

And when there was nothing to shoot, I used my friends without them knowing, although I got caught.

2018

I knew that Mdina would have the kind of light I was looking for, but I didn’t know what time exactly needed to be. I did some research on The Photographer's Ephemeris for the best time, and I just went a bit before.

And the search continues.

Revisiting St James Church in Valletta several times was very fruitful.

I am always trying new techniques and on the alert for the Decisive Moment.

Rome

My wife took me to Rome for my birthday. It rained for four straight days. I didn’t give up, but the camera stopped working with all the rainwater that it got. Back at the hotel, a hairdryer dried the camera, and after an hour, it started working again.

Part 2 will be out on Saturday 1st October 2022
