My Street Photography Journey (Part 2)

2019

London

Don’t be afraid to shoot people. Most of the time, people are friendly. If someone tells you to delete the image, just do so. Another opportunity will come for sure.

I never listen to music while I am shooting Street Photography. I want to be part of the surroundings, blend in and, most importantly, listen to what is happening around me.

Street Hunting is one way of doing Street Photography.

Always on the alert for the Decisive Moment like Henri Cartier Bresson said.

I started seeing geometries, patterns, backgrounds, architecture, etc.

Observe shadows, light, and reflections.

Back to Malta

I wasn’t happy with my work when I came back from London. Although I had some good work, I knew I could have done better. I started working on the scene better.

I went all out in educating myself on this genre, from what has been done in the beginning to what is being done today. I got hungry to learn more and more. The more I read and saw other photographers' work, the more I wanted to go and shoot.

Back to London Again

ChinaTown is an amazing place to shoot colorful Street Photography and loads of opportunities.

This time, I knew I had to do better and I knew I was doing better every day I was in London. Because I researched before going back to London again, I knew where to go and shoot, what to expect and what to find.

The Tate Modern Museum was on my top list of places to visit. When I arrived, I was so excited that I was shooting left, right, and center. I shook myself awake to become more organized in terms of what I shot and how I shot it. And things started getting better and better. I fell in love with this place and I knew I would return here many times.

2020 started by being back in London.

This trip wasn’t an easy task as I was with my lovely wife on our 20th wedding anniversary. But I couldn’t be in London and not shoot Street Photography.

I was in London. The Tate Modern Museum kept coming up in my mind. How can I go there without letting my wife down? The Universe heard me. One afternoon, my wife told me that she was tired and wanted to go and rest. This was the moment to go to the Tate Modern Museum.

And here I was, like a little kid with a new toy or at the play field.

Back to Malta and the Pandemic Hit Us!

I am the kind of guy that Never Give Up easily. But thanks to my work, I still had to go out and shoot the atmosphere in the streets and what was happening in these crazy times.

Although the streets were nearly empty, this was a good task as it meant the roads were less chaotic. OK, you could hardly see anyone and had to wait longer for the right subject, but I embraced these times and made the best of them. I still went out in my spare time to find new locations and re-visit places at different times of day and worked on a scene until I was happy. After all, things weren’t that bad for Street Photography in Malta.

What Should You Do If You Have a Lot of Time in a Pandemic?

I started thinking about what else I could accomplish or photograph in different mediums.

Double Exposures have always been something I've admired and wanted to do. So I tried one and immediately had success.

ICM (Intentional Camera Movement) was all over the internet at the time, and I was intrigued by it. I tried it out and it went well too. Always keeping in mind Street Photography.

Textured images: Adding a texture to an image was also something I came across on the internet and was intrigued by. I tried this out with different textures until I found the right one.

Also on my mind were infrared photographs, especially because I possessed a camera that had been adapted to shoot infrared. I took the camera with me one day and had a go at it.

The images in the converted infrared camera came out reddish, so I decided to convert them into Black & White.

I started competing in street photography sites and I started doing well. I did succeed, and I was also asked for interviews in foreign magazines, and my work started being published successfully globally.

Street Photography Magazine (Online)(America), The Pictorial List (Online)(Australia), Inspired Eye Magazine (Digital)(Asia), F/8 Street Photography Magazine (Printed)(UK), Fine Eye Photo Magazine (Digital), Eye Photo Magazine (Digital), Progressive Street – Out of Bounds (Online)(Italy), FRAMES (App)(Poland)
